Overview
The Authenticator app can be used to sign in to any Microsoft account without using a password, only their email account and authentication method. Users can enable passwordless phone sign-in for their accounts in the Authenticator app on any supported Android or iOS device.
Issue
Some websites, such as Vector, require users to sign in with a password. If a user signs in to a website with passwordless sign in, then tries to access a website that requires a password, they may get the following error:
AADSTS75011: Authentication method 'X509, MultiFactor, X509Device' by which the user authenticated with the service doesn't match requested authentication method 'Password, ProtectedTransport'.
Troubleshooting
Sign in With Password Instead
- Go to the website you want to access. You should see the Microsoft sign in page.
- If the error loads immediately instead of the sign in page, clear your browser cache and cookies.
- Enter your email address and click Next.
- When prompted to authenticate by entering a code with the authenticator app, click Use your password instead.
- Enter your password and click Next.
- Approve the sign in with the authenticator app.
Disable Passwordless Sign In
- Open the authenticator app on your mobile device.
- Tap your Providence College account.
- Tap the settings icon in the top right corner.
- Tap Disable passwordless sign-in requests.
- Tap Disable.
