Passwordless Sign In Error

Overview

The Authenticator app can be used to sign in to any Microsoft account without using a password, only their email account and authentication method. Users can enable passwordless phone sign-in for their accounts in the Authenticator app on any supported Android or iOS device.

Issue

Some websites, such as Vector, require users to sign in with a password. If a user signs in to a website with passwordless sign in, then tries to access a website that requires a password, they may get the following error:

AADSTS75011: Authentication method 'X509, MultiFactor, X509Device' by which the user authenticated with the service doesn't match requested authentication method 'Password, ProtectedTransport'.

Troubleshooting

Sign in With Password Instead

  1. Go to the website you want to access. You should see the Microsoft sign in page.
    1. If the error loads immediately instead of the sign in page, clear your browser cache and cookies.
  2. Enter your email address and click Next.
  3. When prompted to authenticate by entering a code with the authenticator app, click Use your password instead.
  4. Enter your password and click Next.
  5. Approve the sign in with the authenticator app.
